We know the market and know that alongside good manufacturers, there are also suppliers of inferior futon mattresses. These often use cheap imported goods that cannot keep up in terms of quality, purity, and comfort.

What was tested?

In this test, we took four comparable products to our FUTON DX 4 from those suppliers who shared the front page of the leading search engines with us in 2020, under the search term "futon".

The following aspects were checked:

• Purity of materials: Analysis of fleece wool, cotton, horsehair and latex.
• Product description: Checking the claims for accuracy and transparency.
• Price-performance: Evaluating quality compared to cost.
• Delivery and packaging: Consideration of environmental friendliness and product protection.
• Lying comfort: assessment of ergonomics and sleeping comfort.

Materialanalysis

The cotton, virgin wool, and horsehair fibers were submitted to the Dr. K.-H. Phan Inspection Office for microscopic analysis. In addition, latex samples were tested for purity by the ECO Institute. All materials were taken directly from the test futons and sent to the testing laboratories in hermetically sealed packaging.
Our reference model, the FUTON DX 4, was exempt from this test because our futon mattresses are regularly tested and certified. The last comprehensive test took place in September 2020.

 

 

The reference model: FUTON DX 4

The FUTON DX 4 is a classic model from our range and represents solid quality. This futon mattress is manufactured in Dortmund and consists exclusively of natural materials such as cotton, horsehair, virgin wool, and natural latex. Certified by the ECO Institute, it meets the highest standards for material purity and freedom from harmful substances.

Comositon of the FUTON DX 4:

• 1 layer fleece wool
• 2 layers cotton
• 1 layer horsehair
• 1 layer natural latex (5cm)
• 1 layer horsehair
• 2 layers cotton
• 1 layer fleece wool

The test futons

The futons tested had a similar construction, but exhibited significant differences in the quality of the materials. Often, inferior alternatives such as shredded wool or synthetic latex were used, which offer significantly inferior properties to pure fleece wool or natural latex.
Shredded wool is a recycled product created by shredding old textiles. While it's inexpensive, it's neither as durable nor as comfortable as high-quality cotton.
Synthetic latex is made from petroleum derivatives such as styrene and butadiene. Unlike natural latex, it lacks the elasticity, durability, and comfort offered by a real latex core.
Why is natural latex good?
Natural latex, derived from the sap of the rubber tree, consists of at least 95% natural components. This elasticity and durability make it a key element of our futon mattresses. In comparison, synthetic latex lacks the quality and durability required for a good night's sleep.
