Our Futonmattresses
Some people assume that a futon is a combination of a futon bed and a futon mattress. Therefore, we use the term "futon mattress" here, so that the futon can be identified as a futon mattress. Of course, the futon mattress is a natural mattress.
The difference between a futon and a mattress
Some people ask about the difference between a futon and a mattress. The simple answer: A futon is a mattress, a natural mattress.
While most mattresses consist of a single, homogeneous core, a futon is made from several or many layers of different natural materials. This allows for particularly subtle nuances in elasticity without sacrificing basic firmness. Furthermore, the natural fibers and multi-layered construction create excellent air permeability ('breathability'), which keeps the bed dry. The result is a healthy, harmonious sleeping environment. Our futon mattresses are also equipped with highly elastic cores made of firm, natural rubber, which greatly improves sleeping comfort and maintains this level over time.
Another feature that distinguishes the natural futon mattress is its craftsmanship, with the layers being held together by thread stitching at only about 20 points. This gives the core of the futon mattress more freedom to breathe and move, which in turn increases comfort and durability.
The production of a high-quality futon mattress is very complex, which is why there are only a few quality manufacturers and correspondingly few good futon mattresses, futons made with passion, like those from Futonwerk.
Quality futon vs. cheap futon
With its many layers of natural materials, the futon mattress offers several advantages over conventional mass-produced mattresses:
The firmness and stability are higher, creating a secure sleeping experience. Diffusion (moisture exchange) is significantly better than with synthetic materials, ensuring a comfortable sleeping environment. The individual materials in the futon mattress are not glued or quilted, allowing them to develop their full potential—both in terms of the sleeping environment and comfort—and maintain their long-term effectiveness.
There are significant differences between the products labeled as futons. As a leading futon manufacturer with production experience dating back to 1988, we naturally know our products and materials down to the last detail and know what goes into creating a good futon mattress. Therefore, in 2020, we conducted a specific comparison test between five of the most successful futons.
